Visual Art

Philosophy The study of visual arts is essential for the following:

  • to teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.
  • to teach students that small differences can have large effects.
  • to teach students to think through and within a material.
  • to help students learn to say what cannot be said in words.
  • to teach students that the arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
  • to teach students to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
  • to teach students that complex forms of problem-solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity.
  • to help students apply the principles of visual art to solve problems in everyday life.
  • to teach students to effectively understand the world with a historical perspective through the arts.
  • to teach students to see, not just look.
  • to teach students about themselves in depth through the process of creative artmaking.
  • to strengthen students in the areas of math, science, reading, writing, and social studies.
  • to prepare students for visual arts literacy, which will help them be responsive to the world in which they live.
