Every other week for the remainder of the school year, the Hillwood PTSO will provide this on-line summary of upcoming happenings and news of interest to Hillwood families. Information comes from a number of sources, including the school's administration, teachers, parents, students, SGA, and PTSO officers & committee chairs. REMINDER – SATURDAY SCHOOL!!
The Hillwood library is open each Saturday morning from 8:30 am to 11:00 a.m. for students and parent with the goal to provide services in the following areas: ACT prep, Gateway intervention, Credit Recovery, make up for students with excused CR absences from the week, Parent training and access to ParentConnection (Gradespeed), and Parent / Counselor meetings. You can also stop in the library during these times just to look around at the cool new stuff The new equipment and technology that our kids are using is amazing. The selection of Hillwood as a Technology Demonstration Site for Metro was a huge blessing for our kids—one that not only enhances their high school careers, but will enable their success for years to come! Please come by some morning and see for yourself!
BAND CAMP
Saturday Feb. 9th is the 1st Concert Band Camp from 10:00-5:00pm. The 2nd Saturday Concert Band Camp is scheduled for Feb. 23th from 1:00-4:30pm Both camps will be held in the band hall at Hillwood.
FAFSA SUNDAY – FEBRUARY 10TH
Seniors & Senior Parents…Is your student going to college this fall?? It is time for families to file the 2008-2009 FAFSA! For the Hope/Lotto scholarship the priority deadline is March 1, 2008; so file soon before the allocated money runs out. There is a free workshop on 2/10/08 to learn how to file the FAFSA! If students plan on going to college & getting ANY scholarships, loans or grants then you MUST file the FAFSA! The FAFSA is the application for the Hope/Lotto scholarships, for all federal loans, and the many private & university related scholarships. The FAFSA reports your household income to the government - this is complex - if you need any help then come to a free workshop to learn how to file your FAFSA!!
"FAFSA - College Goal Sunday" is THIS SUNDAY February 10th, at Nashville State Community College, 2pm - 4pm. THREE HILLWOOD CLUSTER CONCERT BANDS IN CONCERT – FRIDAY FEBRUARY 22ND
Mark you calendars for an exciting opportunity to hear our Hillwood Cluster Band students in concert. The Concert which will feature the HG Hill Middle, Bellevue Middle and Hillwood High School Symphonic bands will begin at 6:30pm on Friday, February 22nd at the Hillwood High School Auditorium. The concert bands will feature the music for the upcoming Middle Tennessee School Band Orchestra Association Concert Festival in March. Hillwood and Bellevue have also been invited to play for the Tennessee Music Educators Association in April. Come and listen to some of the best bands in the State of Tennessee.
TOPPER FOOTBALL PLAYERS SIGN WITH CARSON NEWMAN COLLEGE
Wednesday February 6th was a big day for two Hillwood Football Players and their Coach Mose Phillips. Marsenio Rayford, receiver and Wesley Jackson, running back signed with Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Marsenio played receiver on offense and defensive end and linebacker on defense.
Wesley played running back and receiver on offense and cornerback and safety on defense. The seniors are very excited about continuing to play football while obtaining their degree.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT - APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEB. 29
This program, which is open to high school juniors and seniors, allows selected student leaders to participate in a paid summer internship with a designated local nonprofit organization. To enhance their experience, awardees will also participate in a 6-day, all expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington DC, in partnership with Bank of America and the Close UP Foundation. FIRST ANNUAL "IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING" ESSAY CONTEST FOR TEENS - ENTER BY APRIL 1
Teens who have faced the experience of helping a family member or friend deal with cancer, or who have lived with cancer themselves, are invited to enter an essay contest sponsored by Gilda's Club Nashville and Nashville Public Television. APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND MATH
The School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt is now accepting applications from current MNPS 8th and 11th graders for the 2008-09 school year. The school immerses students in a part-time high school experience on the Vanderbilt campus through advanced coursework, laboratories, and summer research projects. All courses earn honors credit. The application deadline is Feb. 15 for 8th graders and March 7 for 11th graders.
