The process of education involves close cooperation and mutual support among all key participants – students, parents, and school staff. We all must accept the inherent responsibility of our roles so that we might all share in your child’s success.

STUDENT RESPONSIBLITIES

YOU, as an individual student, bear the ultimate responsibility for your own education and learning. Your daily attendance, attitude and consistent effort are the foundation for your success and the success of others. NO student has the right to infringe on the learning of others by disrupting class, sleeping or not participating in class.

The following are basic daily expectations of you as a student at Hillwood High School.

Students should:

1. Attend each day.

2. Have all necessary materials for each class (book, notebook, pencil, etc.).

3. Be on time!!

4. Commit yourself to learn.

5. Be alert, positive, and attentive in class to understand the objective of each day’s lessons and to take notes as needed to reinforce good learning and to prepare homework assignments.

6. Develop consistent and sound study habits at home that reinforce each day’s learning.

7. Treat your fellow students, teachers, school staff, and school visitors with courtesy and respect.

8. Follow classroom and school policies

TEACHER CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES

Teachers should:

1. Explain the course expectations, grading scale, and classroom expectations so that they are fully understood by students and parents.

2. Explain each day the objective of the lesson and the resultant homework so that they are fully understood.

5. Provide time, encouragement, and a suitable environment for your child to do good schoolwork, including homework.

6. Help your child be prepared for school each day (necessary materials, proper attire, etc.).

Components of an effective school-wide discipline plan:

An effective discipline plan is applied universally so that regardless of where student/parent goes one encounters the same procedure. School-wide consistency is the key component to an effective discipline plan.

  • Student Code of Conduct and Related Policies Booklet

  • School-wide Rules

  • Expectations of students and staff

  • Tardy/early dismissal procedures

  • Consequences for skipping school

  • Parent notification of school rules

  • Parent notification of referrals/suspension

  • Parent conference procedures

  • Dress Code Policy

  • Cell Phone Policy

  • Classroom Expectations (posted in every class)

  • Classroom management/reasonable and logical consequences

  • Restroom rules

  • Cafeteria rules

  • Hallway/Stair rules

  • Assembly rules

  • Dismissal procedures

  • Bus rules

Basic Structure for Discipline Plan:

  • Rules/Procedures – clearly state the expected behaviors (no more than five)

  • Consequences – predictable, reasonable, logical, consistent

  • Rewards – intrinsic and extrinsic

School-Wide Discipline Plan

Students should:

1. Attend each day.

Ø If you must be absent, a note from a parent/guardian must be given to your 1st period teacher within three (3) days. Your 1st period teacher will give you an excuse note that you should show all of your teachers.

2. Be on time!!

Consequences for tardiness to class, during a semester will be as follows:

A student receives two (2) points each six weeks for perfect attendance and no tardies.

3. Treat your fellow students, teachers, school staff, and school visitors with courtesy and respect.

ANY STAFF MEMBER MAY CORRECT ANY STUDENT FOR MISBEHAVIOR.

Failure to follow the instructions of any staff member or substitute is insubordination, Students guilty of insubordination will be subject to suspension from school. Substitute teachers have the same authority as teachers and should be treated with the same respect.

Regarding Consequences

It is important that students at Hillwood High School feel safe. Remember to discipline yourself. Failure to follow school rules interferes with your ability to learn and feel safe. It also has a negative effect on the total school community. Teachers have the responsibility and the right to set specific classroom rule. Should you fail to meet expectations, be aware that you will receive appropriate consequences.
