Class Ranking & Weighting of Grades

As of the 2005-2006 academic year, we no longer rank our students. Valedictorian and Salutatorian, as well as requirements for the Honors Diploma, are calculated by the cumulative numerical average at the end of the seventh semester. Participants in the Scholars Program with an unweighted GPA of 85 and above shall receive the Honors Diploma upon graduation.

In computing grades for IB/AP courses, five points are added to each nine week and semester exam grades. Three points are added to each nine week and semester exam grades for Honors courses.

What Makes Our School Unique?

We are one of five high schools in Tennessee to receive recognition as an International Baccalaureate World School. Our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is a college preparatory program that provides tutoring and classroom support for students who have the potential to go to college. Through AVID, students are encouraged, supported and prepared to tackle college preparatory work. These two programs in combination with our well established Advanced Placement program, give Hillwood another layer of academic excellence in our school community.

Our students represent a diverse population from over 30 nations around the world. Parental and community support, an outstanding faculty, a strong curriculum, and students that are willing to be challenged at the highest academic level, are daily reminders of how unique we are.
