Descriptions of Funded Programs
Andrew Jackson Police Youth Camp Overnight camping experience for youth age 8 to 12 from the inner city and from city shelters at a 35 acre camp owned by the FOP. Youth will play sports, swim, go on field trips, and participate in many activities. Six (6) groups of children will stay from Monday to Saturday. They will get to know police officers on an individual, personal basis.

Backfield in Motion Summer Program for inner city boys age 10 to 18 years of age focusing on academic enrichment and life skills. CONTACT: Stephen McAdoo 227-9935
Bethlehem Centers of Nashville (Slammin Jammin City Camp) Enrichment camp for youth age 13 to 16 from Davidson County, with emphasis on Andrew Jackson Court, John Henry Hale Homes and the surrounding areas. The camp will offer academic enrichment, sports, recreation, prevention education, character education, community service and health/fitness activities. Youth will take field trips to various fun and educational landmarks and enjoy various educational speakers.

Bethlehem Centers of Nashville (Vocational Success) Program for youth aged 16-18 years from Davidson County, with an emphasis on youth from John Henry Hale Homes, Andrew Jackson Courts and surrounding communities. Participants will spend 4 weeks learning about various aspects of employment through job-readiness skill training. The youth will then interview with local businesses in the Nashville area and have a 4-week work/internship experience.

The Charles Davis Foundation (Camp Peace) Multi-disciplinary enrichment program for low income youth age 9 to 16 from Inner City areas of Nashville, and especially those from J.C. Napier Homes, Tony Sudekum Homes, Cayce Homes and the Dickerson Road area. The program will provide academics in the mornings and a wide variety of positive, educational, cultural and economic development activities in the afternoons. CONTACT: Toni Frances Davis 582-1751

Christ Centered Ministries, Inc. Program for youth age 6 to 13 years from East Nashville. The program will include character education, leadership development, communications/public speaking, educational guidance, fitness, reading activities and field trips.

Family Affair Ministries, Inc. (Back to Basics) Summer Youth Enrichment Camp will serve youth ages 6-12 years from East Nashville, Dickerson Road, Ewing Lane and Creekwood neighborhoods. Family Affair Ministries, Inc. (Totally Teen) Summer Youth Enrichment Camp will serve youth ages 13-18 years from East Nashville, Dickerson Road, Ewing Lane and Creekwood neighborhoods. Fannie Battle Day Home Academic enrichment program for youth age 5-12 years of age primarily from East Nashville. The program will include tutoring, art, science, music, dance, swimming lessons, dance, P.E., computer and enrichment outings. CONTACT: Sara Longhini 228-6745
Fisk University Math and Science program for boys age 10-16 years of age in Davidson County, with emphasis on youth attending school in proximity to Fisk University.

Friends of Metro Dance Ball room dance training for youth age 9-18 years from Napier, Parkwood, Hadley, Antioch, Hartman, Watkins, McFerrin, East, McCabe, Sevier, Coleman and Looby Community Center neighborhoods. Children will receive professional instruction and have weekly practice. They will take field trip to a Big Band Dance and have a closing performance.

Girl Scout Council of Cumberland Valley Summer program for girls age 8 –17 from the Andrew Jackson, Cumberland View, Sam Levy, Tony Sudekum, J. C. Napier and Vine Hill neighborhoods. One week camping experience at Girl Scout camp, including archery, obstacle course, arts & crafts, singing, swimming, camp fires, canoeing, hiking, rappelling and nature activities. Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. (Job Readiness/Retail Training) Summer program for low income and disabled youth age 14 to 18 years of age in Davidson County. Youth will learn appropriate work place communication skills, work ethics and job readiness skills to include job application training and job interview strategies. Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. (Work Program) Jobs program for disabled youth age 16-18 years of age in Davidson County. Each child receives intensive job coaching to learn job skills and good work attitudes and receives placement on a summer job.

Lee Chapel Learning Center Academic enrichment program for youth age 6 to 12 years from North Nashville/Subarea 8. Youth will receive instruction in reading, language arts, math, and computers in the morning, with afternoons devoted to arts, crafts, music and other enrichment activities. Children will participate in field trips to places of historical, cultural and economic significance.

Martha O’Bryan Center Summer Program focused on academics, career development, social skills, financial literacy, leadership and civic engagement for youth age 8 to 18 from the James A. Cayce neighborhood. The program will focus on close-to-home activities to hel youth take a different look at the world around them. Metropolitan Board of Parks & Recreation Enrichment program for youth age 6 to 14 years from the Cleveland Park neighborhood. Metro Parks will provide recreation, social activities and cultural activities. CONTACT: Sherry Hipps 862-8424 ext 362
New Hope CDC Summer enrichment camp for youth age 6 to 13 years of age from Edgehill Homes and the surrounding community. Youth will participate in academic enrichment in reading, writing, math and computers. They will attend an environmental science camp, as well as participate in activities in arts/crafts, music, dance, sports/games, swimming and public speaking.

Oasis Center Summer program series to targeted small groups age 13 to 17 from East Nashville, Inglewood area surrounding Bailey Middle School, North Nashville area surrounding John Early Middle School, and the South Nashville/Nolensville Road area. Programs will include Summer of Ali for boys, Youth United for youth impacted by violence in their neighborhoods, Your Story Continues for refugee/immigrant youth, YES for youth from Bailey and John Early Middle Schools, Oasis Community Impact for East Nashville Youth and Tennessee Youth Advisory Council for former foster youth. Rocketown Summer program for youth age 9 to 18 from Davidson County, with special emphasis on J.C. Napier, Edgehill Homes and East Nashville. Youth will participate each morning in film-editing, music/songwriting, dance, art or skateboarding. The afternoon offers electives to experience additional artistic activities. Salama Urban Ministries Program for youth in grades K-12 from Davidson County with emphasis on the Edgehill neighborhood. The program will include academics and performance arts, with older students exposed to college and career preparation. CONTACT: George Crook 251-4050
Samaritan Ministries Summer program for youth age 6 to 11 from Cumberland View Housing Development. Children will get exposure to academic enrichment, computers, and cultural history/diversity. Spruce Street CDC Program for girls age 9 to 14 years from John Henry Hale Homes and from the vicinity of Fisk University. The program will focus on math, science, reading, writing, tools for success, recreation, finance management, swimming, field trips and guest speakers.

Tennessee Thunder Basketball program for youth age 9 to17 years of age from North Nashville and Subarea 8. Youth will learn and practice the fundamentals of basketball and of athletic competition. They will travel to out-of-state competitions. Youth will also attend workshops in ACT/SAT preparation, AIDS/sex awareness, drug abuse prevention, anger management and conflict resolution. Woodbine Community Organization (Hamilton Creek Program) Summer program for youth age 6 to 12 years of age from the Hamilton Creek area of Antioch. The program will expose children to arts, crafts, music, drama, science and math. CONTACT: Tony Woodham 850-3458
Woodbine Community Organization (WCO Summer Youth Program) Summer program for youth age 6 to 18 years of age from area codes 37211 and 37210. The program will focus mainly on youth with English as a second language, and will focus on cross-cultural communication.

Boys & Girls Club/YMCA Youth Development Center (Starlings Volleyball) The Starlings Jr. Olympic Volleyball program provides young women aged 10 – 18 years from the West and North Nashville areas an athletic, social and educational experience. The children participating will practice volleyball skills and attend competitions. Additionally, they will receive counseling on life issues, character education, enrichment, tutoring and educational guidance.
